TLP : Inner View
...it's interactive...
it's a Vessel for my artwork and me
and it is a part of Time lapse Project

and so much more
Here are some keywords :
...
It's about :
Memories
The space within the space
The relation between reality and time
The observable reality and
the abstract / virtual reality
...
It's about :
Us people
How we live
Who we are
Our personal memories
Our DNA
...
Inspired by :
The allegory of the
cave dwellers / Plato
Trojans
...
Combined with :
Our time in history at this moment
The migration issues
Closing doors and
building high walls
Closing borders and
independence
...
The cubes :
Will be custom made
With your photo and habitat
Your memories and DNA
And
Our meeting and our memory
Our intersecting Time Lapses
All combined in one plexiglas cube of 20 X 20 cm
...
And that is only the beginning...
The cubes will have a destiny
and a purpose :
The process:
I will assemble hundreds of plastic cubes of 20 x 20 x 20 cm in the coming years...
They will each be custom made, filled with a person's or a family's very personal items, memories and souvenirs.
Everybody who would like to be part of the project can order a personal cube, for themselves or as gift to somebody special...
I will come and visit you at your home, during my set up for the photographs we have a little chat and I will explain about the exhibition, when all the cubes will come together as one big whole with different photos and cubes...
Together we will fill your cube with small articles that define you. An old love letter, a piece of clothing, a festival ticket, a ring...something that is close to you, and a hair/ DNA sample.
Then I'll take one photo of you inside a cube/tent of 1M x 1M, that is placed inside you living or diner room, a place where you feel good... a space inside a space...
I also take other photos and a one minute video of this cube-tent and parts of your interior you would like me to see, from different angles. These photos and video will have a hazy fish eye lens so that the images are out of focus.
Custom made means that I will take into account which colors you like and your preferences for the overall look of the cube...I use wax in different colors to keep everything into place, it will be a coherent whole.
At the back of the photo inside of the transparent cube ( see above ) comes a text... about you or some dates, things of the news of that day, or a poem or things you would like to be written.
At the end you can also give me a little personal thing, of which I'll make, in my mobile atelier, a piece of art which I will place alongside a new code for the "Time Lapse Project" when I return home, which other people can find...
I take everything home and when your cube is finished I'll send you a photo of the result, pending the exhibition, where all the cubes, photos and video material come together in one big whole...
This project will have to grow and grow, until the large wall is born.
Your cube will first be part of this large wall in my next exhibition, where you see all sorts of people but alike, all sorts of interiors but alike, all sorts of homes/streets but alike, all sorts of stories but alike, all more or less the same DNA.
We're all similar yet different, divers and alike.
We are all 1 equal part of the whole, strong when united, yet all unique and incomparable.
Why build walls ?
Isn't Nationalism a thing of the Past ?!
At the finisage, the last day of the exhibition, we "break" the wall down and everybody takes his personal cube home.
Your personal cube has been a part of a greater whole..

(example)
Urban installation “Inner View” Documenta Athens:
- On different locations in the city, I will set up a white cube of (2m x 2m x 2m) - front and back are open - where vistors and passers-by can sit down for a portrait picture with the open background of their choice. (Inspired by Plato’s Cave Dwellers.) They receive a print out of the picture as a souvenir.
- The picture will be used to create a small plastic cube of (20cm x 20cm x 20cm). This small work will contain the picture as background, but also some more info on the subject of the photo (date, place of residence, their ambitions, biggest hope and fear, a small memento, …). The cube will also be filled with various small objects related to the person: personal items like an old love letter, concert ticket, piece of fabric,… and a DNA hair sample. The contents of the cube will be assembled using wax glue, for a 3D composition.
- I will be making hundreds of cubes like this during Documenta, gathering pictures on different locations in the city, with a variety of people and the background of their lives. The creation of the cubes will also be visble for the audience, as a live performance.
- All the cubes will be set up as a huge wall during the course of the exhibition (indoor or outdoor). The installation will be growing every day, as an organic thing, composed of individual and very diverse but same-haped cubes. A variety of people passing on the streets of Athens will be captured in the cubes: curious tourists, Documenta artists and visitors, residents of the city, stranded refugees, homeless inhabitants of Athens…
- Near the end of the expo, when the wall is finished, it will be torn down by the audience and bulldozers, during a live performance. A dumpster truck will be filled with the remainings. The underlying message is “do not build walls, create openings”.
- The rubble will be transported to my studio in Belgium, where I will use it as a starting point for a new art work for which I already have several ideas. This large new work can be displayed at a future big event. The revenue of this future art work will be partly donated to support different refugee projects (shelter, camps, integration programs).
- It will be a project of many helpers, which strengthens the idea of working together!
- Key words to define this project are:
- Diversity = opportunity
- Humanity: strong when united, capable of co-existence and equality
- The naïvity to keep building borders and walls
- The upcoming Nationalism
- Destruction of cultural heritage and civilization by conflicts, war, terrorists,...
- Rebuild what was smashed
- Our flexibility and creativity to find solutions as a species
